Crown of Thorns Plant Care Guide: Euphorbia milii Cultivation Insights
In Thailand, it is believed that the number of flowers on a Euphorbia crown of thorns plant foretells the luck of the plant keeper. Over the past two decades, hybridizers have improved the plant, resulting in more and larger flowers (and potentially better luck, if the saying is true) than ever before. In the right conditions, Euphorbia (crown of thorns) hybrids can bloom almost year-round.
Growing Crown of Thorns Indoors If you're seeking a plant that thrives in typical household conditions, the crown of thorns plant (Euphorbia milii) is an excellent choice. The plant is easy to grow, as it adapts well to normal room temperatures and dry indoor environments. It also forgives occasional missed waterings and feedings.
Proper Placement and Temperature For optimal crown of thorns houseplant care, place the plant in a very sunny window where it will receive 3-4 hours of direct sunlight per day. The plant prefers average room temperatures between 65-75°F (18-24°C). It can withstand temperatures as low as 50°F (10°C) in winter and as high as 90°F (32°C) in summer.
Watering and Feeding From spring through late fall, water the crown of thorns plant when the soil is dry at a depth of about an inch (2.5 cm), approximately the length of your finger to the first knuckle. Water the plant by flooding the pot, and then empty the saucer to ensure the roots are not left sitting in water. In winter, allow the soil to dry to a depth of 2-3 inches (5-7.5 cm) before watering.
Feed the plant with a liquid houseplant fertilizer every two weeks during spring, summer, and fall. In winter, dilute the fertilizer to half strength and apply it monthly.
Hardiness and Size Crown of thorns plants are hardy in USDA Hardiness Zones 9-11. Outdoors, they can reach a mature size of 3-6 feet tall, while indoor specimens typically max out around 2 feet tall.
Sunlight Needs Crown of thorns plants thrive in full to partial sun exposure.
Soil Requirements Use a well-drained soil mix for optimal growth.
