Agave attenuata (Fox Tail Agave), unlike many Agaves, is an evergreen succulent perennial that produces a handsome rosette of silvery, pale green leaves, up to 4 ft. wide, without teeth or terminal spines. The rosette is composed of flexible leaves which gracefully arch back, resembling an open flower, and is borne on a thick stem that can reach 4 ft. in height. This Agave derives its common name from the impressive arching flower stalk that emerges from the rosette in summer, reaching up to 5-10 ft. in height, and reflexing back towards the ground before arching up again like a fox tail. The plant bears greenish-yellow flowers which give way to seed pods and many new plantlets, making it a dramatic focal point or accent that can be used in decorative pots.

In terms of light requirements, Agave attenuata thrives in full sun but can also tolerate part shade. It should be kept in a frost-free area during the winter and placed on the patio or balcony in the summer. The plant is easily grown in slightly acidic, sandy or gravelly, moist or dry, well-drained soils, and is drought tolerant, although it does not perform well in desert heat.

Agave attenuata grows up to 4-5 ft. tall and 6-8 ft. wide, and its impressive arching flower stalk and greenish-yellow flowers make it a great choice for beds and borders, city gardens, coastal gardens, rock gardens, succulent gardens, or Mediterranean gardens. It is an ideal accent plant for sunny borders or decorative containers.
